Once a year, most years, weary eyed kids from 3 years to 15 stand in line, around 7:00 A.M. to register for their ticket that enables them to compete with 60-70 other youngsters, under the watchful eyes of Grandparents or Mums and Dads in casting their lines into the lake at Minilakes. All are sure they are going to catch the "Hugest Fish" Those under 5 compete to catch the smallest. What a joy to see families in the park for some good old fashioned fishing fun. Volunteers were hard pressed to keep up with the catch measuring and their golf carts rushed around from one side to the other with the fishermen praying that their prize would not fit into the scale. The first prize was a Minilakes member's young man who skilfully landed a hard fighting 16 inch bass. All fish were caught on barbless hooks and we are happy to report that there no fish casualties. All returned to the lake to be caught another day. Prizes for Everyone! Trophies for some plus delicious hotdogs and cold drinks were dolled out at the pavilion centre. Thanks to all who attended and all who volunteered their time to make this the best derby ever.
